Kenyans stranded in Germany

Evans Cheruiyot and 14 other Kenyan athletes are stranded in Germany, unable to return home after their manager failed to pay them their prize money and give them return air tickets.Reports from France said the Kenyans, 11 of them men, are in terrible conditions in Strasbourg on the French, German border.

Slachtoffer
“It is freezing there. Yet they sleeping on mattresses which they hire from their manager for Euros 200 a month (Sh20,000).
The news of their suffering hit the French television (channel 3) and local newspapers. The Press seemed to blame their French manager, Jean Conrath, who is twice (1976 and 1980) Olympic Games 5,000m champion.Cheruiyot won the Paris 20km race on October 16.”Kenyan athletes victims of an unscrupulous French manager,” said the reports.”They were accomodated in appalling conditions in a house without heating (they had to boil water to try to get warm,” said the reports.

Woekerprijzen
“There was snow for two days last week, fridge and shower and paid the manager 200 Euros a month to sleep on mattresses,” said the report. “And they havent seen yet the colour of their winning prizes,” the report said. The athletes and local authorities have lodged a complaint against the manager. A temporary housing solution in a hotel has been found by the social services. They should be repatriated (from Frankfurt, Germany) by the end of the week when theyve got hold of their money and return ticket).

Athletics Kenya Secretary-General, David Okeyo, confirmed he knows the manager but denied knowledge of the scandal.
“We always tell athletes to inform us when they go for such competition but they dont,” said Okeyo. This is not the first time Kenyan athletes are caught in appalling conditions abroad. A group of Kenyan girls were deported from Italy in June in similar circumstances. No action was taken against their manager, who failed to register them with the immigration department.
