Ethiopias double world champion Tirunesh Dibaba believes that she should be have been named the IAAFs World Athlete of the Year for 2005. Russian Pole Vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva was crowned as the top female athlete in the world for the second successive year after multiple world record feats and her first world title.

But in an exclusive interview to ethiopiarun.org on Monday, the 20-year old said, “I should have been named the worlds athlete. Everyone says that I did not break a world record, but everyone seems to forget that I broke the indoor 5000m record in Boston.” In an incredible year that started with a run-away victory over Benita Johnson in the View from Greater Edinburgh cross country international in Scotland, Dibaba took double victories first in the long and short course races at the 33rd IAAF World Cross Country Championships in St. Etienne/ St. Galmier, France and then again over the 5000m and 10000m at the 10th IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Asked whether her opinion is shared by many, Dibaba said, “Many journalists present at the awards in Monaco told me that the award should have been mine. I am not very upset, but I feel that I should have won the award.
