Dibaba used the same tactics she employed in 2005, when she set the global indoor standard with a time of 14:32.93. Dibaba expended her energy supply, but fell just short of the mark yesterday with a time of 14:35.46. “I ran a nice race, I thought I was on the record, but somehow I just didnt make it,” said Dibaba, through her interpreter. “I would have liked to have gotten the record. “It was just a good hard race. I thought I ran very well and I thought I was on a record pace, but when there were two (laps) left I knew I wasnt going to make it.
Ejegayehu Dibaba
Dibabas sister, Ejegayehu ‘Gigi Dibaba, a world champion 10,000-meter runner, set a blistering early pace in yesterdays 5,000. Tirunesh settled in behind her sister before taking control on the 13th lap. Once Tirunesh lapped the field, it was just a race against the clock. “In my heart, I thought I was on the pace,” Tirunesh said. Gigi was second in 15:18.97 and American Sarah Slattery was third in 15:37. Quantity surpassed quality in the mens mile, which was won by Kenyan Elkanah Angwenyi in 3:55.95. Ten of the next 11 runners finished the race in under four minutes, the most ever in an indoor event. The previous record was eight, set in Stockholm on Feb. 15, 2001.
Defar
Meseret Defar of Ethiopia made a furious effort in the 3,000 to break her own meet record, but missed by under a second. Running alone in the second half of the race, Defar broke the tape in 8:30.94, just shy of the 8:29.05 she set last year.Two-time Olympic silver medal-winner Terrence Trammell gave a burst of energy in the middle portion of the race to win the 60 with a time of 6.57 seconds. American MeLisa Barber beat a loaded field in the womens 60-meter dash with a winning time of 7:09 seconds. Canadian Carmen Douma-Hussar took the womens mile in 4:29.52 while American Nicole Blood won the scholastic mile in 4:51.30. Cushing Academy brothers Ayalew Taye (4:11.44) and Sintayehu Taye (4:12.89) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the scholastic mile, won by Michael Coe.
