Yohannes Biffa Belda, Girma Elala Bedada, Abiy Hailemichael, Yewubat Wubet Tessma and Baset Abrya, five of the members of the Ethiopian National team being sponsored to the 2006 MTN Lagos international Half Marathon, by athletics icon, Haile Gabressellasie, will arrive the country today.

They will join Francis Kibwot of Kenya and Roland Ortiz Celis of Colombia, first and second place winners in the recently concluded Obudu Ranch International Mountain Race, among other athletes who are already in the country, for the race.
The athletes arrival was confirmed in Lagos yesterday, by Kola Oyeyemi, Senior Manager, Master Brand, MTN, and the Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), ex-quarter miler, Sunday Bada, who also confirmed that a special press conference to introduce the athletes and other foreign athletes who have arrived the country will be held in Lagos before the event.

Oyeyemi, who overseas the Marathon at MTN, stated that the Ethopian athletes will be arriving the country to give vent to Gebresellasies aim of producing the first Ethopian winner of the competition since MTN took over its sponsorship five years ago. “All but one of the six athletes sponsored by Haile Gebreselasie will be in the country by Thursday. Aynaddis Adugna, the 6th member of the original team, will not be in the country for the race due to health reasons. Her place in the team has been taken by Tigisit Tufa, sister of Meseret Tufa, the world famous Cross Country racer”, Oyeyemi said.Olympic Medalist, Bada, who has just returned to Lagos, after overseeing the success of the Obudu Mountain Race in Cross River announced that a meet the-media-programme will be held at the MTN Marathon Press Centre, Ikeja to unveil the foreign athletes to the media, adding that “most of the elite local athletes involved in the race are now in Lagos.Just like some of the foreign athletes who participated in the recently concluded Obudu Mountain Challenge, they have all moved to Lagos preparatory to the race on Saturday.”
