World and European champion Jason Gardener overcame difficult circumstances to start his international indoor season with a win in Moscow over 60 metres. The “Bath Bullet”, with two quick times under his belt in domestic races already this month, claimed victory at the Russian Winter meeting in a time of 6.60seconds.

Karlsruhe
Gardener held off the challenge of South Africas Morne Nagel by one hundredth of a second, with Andrey Yepishin of Russia third in 6.65secs.The 30-year-old Gardener had to maintain his concentration after two false starts in the race, solid preparation for the 60m competitions lined up at the Norwich International match in Glasgow on Saturday and in Germany the following day.He is one of the only athletes tipped for victory at Kelvin Hall in the high-profile clash against Italy, Russia, Sweden and a Commonwealth Select side.Gardener also admitted he is looking forward to competing in Karlsruhes LBBW meeting, a venue where in the past he has produced outstanding performances.”I have always ran well there and it is renowned as a very fast track,” said Gardener, who equalled his then-European record of 6.46secs in the Europahalle two years ago.

Gemene Best spelen
Last year at the meeting Ronald Pognon took away Gardeners record, clocking 6.45secs but when it mattered most at the European Indoor Championships three weeks later was defeated by his British rival.Gardener, although clearly in excellent shape, still insists chasing a Commonwealth Games 100m medal is his priority this year and therefore will not defend his World Indoor crown.Defending his title would give him only a week before the Games track and field programme gets underway in Melbourne, and he is adamant doubling at both meetings would be counter productive.
