A 29-year-old man has died while taking part in the Great North Run on Tyneside. More than 38,000 people donned their trainers and took to the streets for the popular half-marathon. In a brief statement, race organisers Nova International confirmed the man had died and offered its “deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends”.

They would not give any details of the victim or when during the race he died.Four men collapsed and died during last years event. Phil Lewis, 52, from Chester-le-Street, Co Durham, David Mahaffey, 43, from York, Kieran Patching, 34, from Chatham in Kent and Mr Wilson were all in the final stage of the run when they collapsed.An inquest found they had died of “inadvertent over-exhaustion” and the hearing ruled Nova International should not be blamed for the deaths.

Following their deaths, the organisers introduced extra safety measures for the event through Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields.The extra safety measures included medics on mountain bikes and an extra medical tent.Shuttle buses were also staged at three points towards the end of the course to help runners who were unable to continue.Among this years runners were Carol Vorderman, Ingrid Tarrant, actors from EastEnders and Coronation Street.The race was started by England football manager Steve McCLaren.South Africas Hendrick Ramaala scored a runaway victory to collect a third mens title in a time of one hour and three seconds.
